Call to Remembrance
Songs of prayer, contemplation and praise
The passion of Christ has long been a subject of inspiration for poets and musicians, and the sacred choral repertoire is overflowing with music appropriate for Lent and Passiontide. Its subject matter lends Passiontide music an immediate emotional impact greater than music for other times and seasons, and it holds a particular fascination and attraction for the choirs of St. Paul’s Parish in Fairfield, Connecticut. Much of the music most familiar to the boy and girl choristers of the St. Paul’s choir is for Passiontide, and the choir approaches its performance with a special intensity of purpose.
This CD presents a selection of the choir’s repertoire that replicates the thematic structure and journey of many of the psalms, beginning with prayer, centering on contemplation, and then closing with thoughts of hope, and a shout of praise.
The St. Paul’s Choir
Widely acknowledged as a leading choir of its type, the Choir of St. Paul’s Fairfield is made up of two components, the 28-voice Choir of Boys & Girls, which sings the treble line, and the 14 voice St. Paul’s Schola, which sings alto, tenor, and bass. The Schola comprises four professional section leaders and eight volunteer singers. The choir’s membership is drawn almost entirely from parish families.

About the title song:
Call to Remembrance – Richard Farrant (?1525- 1580)
Richard Farrant was Master of the Choristers at St. George’s Chapel,
Windsor, in 1564 and the Chapel Royal in 1567. He was also associated with
the stage, and the boys in his charge often participated in theatrical productions. His music for the church is important, and several of his anthems are in wide use in churches and cathedrals to this day. Call to remembrance is an evocative and sensitive setting of two verses from Psalm 25:
Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies:
and thy loving-kindness, which have been ever of old.
O remember not the sins and offences of my youth:
but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness.
